Want to Read a Literary Magazine for Your Book Club?

Book club

Love memoirs but don’t always have time for a full-length book? Looking for fresh, contemporary voices telling real-life stories?

Let’s face it—reading an entire book every month can be a challenge. What if, instead of one long book, you read a few compelling short pieces?

The Chicago Story Press Literary Journal publishes powerful, personal nonfiction—essays ranging from 1,000 to 3,000 words—that you can finish in one sitting, but that stay with you long after. And they are all free to access—no paywall.

We’re currently ranked the #5 Best Nonfiction Literary Magazine, and we’re passionate about helping readers connect with stories that reflect real life in all its complexity—grief, love, illness, motherhood, resilience, and more.

How to Use the Journal for Your Book Club

It’s simple:

  • Choose 3 pieces from our journal. Feel free to mix and match—each piece stands on its own.
  • Read them before your next meeting.
  • Use the following questions to guide your discussion.

Discussion Questions

  • What emotions did this piece spark in you?
  • What images or phrases stood out most?
  • Did you learn something new or see something differently?
  • Did this piece remind you of anything in your own life?
  • Which moments could you most relate to—or not relate to—and why?
  • How did the writing style shape your experience of the story?
  • Did the author challenge any of your assumptions?
  • If the author were in the room, what would you ask them?

Why it Works

Short nonfiction can open up powerful conversations—quick to read, but rich in depth. Perfect for busy schedules, yet meaningful enough to inspire reflection and connection.

So gather your group, pick your pieces, and let the stories spark something new.
